NHLA (National Hardwood Lumber Association) Grading Rules/Terms: Grade refers to the percentage of clear cutting (without knots and other defects) you can get from each board.
| Select & Better (Sel & Btr) |
The top standard grade, meaning there will be larger clear cuttings in each board. This grade is best when you need defect free boards for projects such as table tops or mouldings. |

| #1 Common (1 com) |
Also known as "cabinet grade." It works well for cabinets because you get smaller clear cuttings but it still works well for rails and stiles, panels, and drawer fronts. |
| #2 and #3 Common (2 com & 3 com) |
Considered "flooring grades." They have a smaller percentage of clear cuttings (shorter and/or narrower pieces) and are mainly used by flooring or furniture manufacturers, where smaller pieces are used. These grades are also used for utility wood. |
